Tactics for the first day----- 15th March.
How I am going to tackle the first day of the trout season,of course depends on the river and weather conditions.
Mid March up here in Scotland is probably going to be cold wet windy and there could even be snow and ice around. The river could be un-fishable due to flood,in that case I will be visiting the local still waters for a spot of rainbow trout fishing.(Tinto)
Anyway assuming that I manage to get on the river I will have to assess on the day, the method I will use.
I wouldn't expect there to be any rising fish,so I can forget fishing dry fly, with spiders and wet flies possibly ruled out as well,so it will probably be weighted nymphs.
My set up then would be 10ft #3 rod fished Czech nymph or French leader style.

Getting ready for the start.
Throughout the season I will be using 3 rods of different lengths and weights to suit the style of fishing and conditions. ( Marryat Tactical)
8 foot #3 for dry fly and the duo.
10 foot #3 for spiders, czech nymping and french nymphing.
9 foot #5 for dry-wet fly streamers duo and trio.
All the rods are used with the appropriate reels (Orvis Battenkill) loaded with weight forward floating lines.
I will also be carrying a Tenkara www.tenkarausa.com
My tippet material will range from 2lbs bs to 5lbs bs (Stroff, Rio and Helium)
I will have at my disposal a full range of hand tied flies-- nymphs, spiders, emergers, klinkhammer, traditional Clyde Style dries and wets. All specially tied for me by local anglers. (Buzzflyfishing and Bigbadtroutfisher)
The weather up here in March will probably be cold wet and windy so I will need to wrap up well.
Thermal underwear, nice loose jumper under a good quality wading jacket (Orvis) and a warm woolly hat.
The wading on the upper Clyde is pretty good but you still need to be careful at certain parts, rocky pools and steep slippy banks especially when the river is carrying a bit extra water.
I will be wearing chest waders(Vision stocking foot) with felt sole boots and fitted studs(Simms)
I am not a deep wader but in flood conditions I will carry a staff and wear a floatation vest.
I try not to carry a lot of things hanging around my neck, they can get tangled up with the fly line and flies, so I only have a pair of snips, fullers earth, fly drying pad attached to a zinger hanging from me and when fishing the dry I will also attach a bottle of floatant(Frog's Fanny)
Should I be intending to travel some distance along the river,I will carry a small back pack containing something to eat,hot drink and bits and pieces of additional fishing items.
And finally should I be lucky enough to catch one of the Clyde's monster fish, I need to carry a scoop net, this is fixed on my back on a magnetic holder,a tape to measure it- a set of scales to way it- and a camera/phone to take a picture of it.
Just one more thing which I think is important: should you be going fishing on your own,try and tell someone where you are going and always carry a fully charged mobile phone in a waterproof plastic bag.
Here I am by Wolfclyde Bridge, ready for a winters fishing stint.
So thats it for now,its just a matter of waiting for the trout season to start.
On my next post I will go through some tactics I may use on the first day.

The start of the trout season 2012----My record.
I have started this blog so I can keep a weekly record of my fly fishing exploits on the Upper Clyde.
I also hope it will be informative to those who decide to come and fish this delightful part of Scotland.
The brown trout season starts in a months time(15th March) and I am looking forward to venturing out on the river as many times as I can.
I will be covering an area from just below Wolfclyde Bridge Biggar, to Roberton burn.
This stretch is controlled by Lamington Angling.
Then on to Abington and Crawford, to just above Camps Bridge, all controlled by UCAPA.
Throughout the season I will be casting my line in as many areas as I can.
Using a selection of flies,(all tied for me by local Clyde anglers)in the hope of tempting the river's resident trout and grayling.
As well as my fishing reports, I would like to share with you my sightings of the local wildlife I encounter while on these trips.
Its a big area to cover and I hope that I am up for it.
As I am now retired and with all the time in the world-I'm going to give it a go.
There is still a month left until the start, so I better get all my rods in order, check all my fly boxes are filled and just sit back and count the days down until the off.
